Building Engineering Basics with LEGO

Young engineers at Manetuck Elementary School are growing their STEAM skills by engaging in coding and architectural lessons. The third graders are using the new LEGO coding kits for hands-on, interactive learning experiences.

Students are building models with LEGO bricks to explore concepts in engineering and design. They can create simple machines, structures and vehicles while learning about forces, motion and problem-solving. Coding is introduced through the online LEGO design kits, where students learn basic programming skills to control their LEGO creations, such as making a creation move or respond to sensors. These activities foster creativity, critical thinking, collaboration and technical skills. Using this comprehensive STEAM resource has made these experiences educational and fun.

A Night Under the Stars to Celebrate Lunar New Year

Students making crafts for Lunar New Year thumbnail263962

The district held a Lunar New Year celebration for its elementary-aged students on Jan. 27 at West Islip High School.

Students and their families were invited to the West Islip High School planetarium, where they began the evening by listening to stories about constellations from around the world. Attendees then participated in a live show in the planetarium on the Chinese lunisolar calendar and star mythology. They learned why the moon plays such an important part in Chinese New Year and discovered the stars and planets they can see from their location in West Islip.

Following the show, members of the West Islip High School Science Honor Society set up activity stations featuring hands-on crafts. Students created fans, paper dragons and lanterns to take home and enjoy.
