It is the responsibility of the Office of Curriculum and Instruction to develop curricula based on the New York State Learning Standards and the Common Core State Standards, which set student learning expectations for what all students should know and be able to do as a result of skilled instruction. In collaboration with administrators and teachers, the Curriculum Office selects textbooks and instructional materials, develops pacing charts for learning (scope and sequence), and provides professional development for staff to ensure that all students have access to instruction leading to attainment of these learning standards. Instructional strategies focus on bringing rich curriculum to every student, and embody current educational mandates and best practices including contemporary educational research and use of data to inform instruction.
To evaluate the success of the program, both qualitative and quantitative data are examined. Examples of these indicators include, but are not limited to the following: results on state mandated assessments (Grades 3 - 8 ELA and Math, Grades 4 & 8 Science, Regents exams), results on local exams, classroom observations, graduation rate, college level course enrollment, Regents diplomas, Regents diplomas with distinction college acceptances, attendance rates, SAT scores, etc.
This ongoing effort on the part of the entire staff is designed to achieve the overall goal of providing excellence in education and meeting the diverse needs of all students.
